Dippin’ Down Under
When my boys are over at the house and they need to leave, they’ll often say, “I’ve got to dip,” meaning they need to leave. So, keeping in that vernacular, Steve and I are “dippin’” down under. Tonight we are flying to Australia for two weeks of much-needed vacation.
Yes, I said vacation.
It has been 10 years since we have had a vacation that lasted more than a few days and did not include my working. During our trip we will visit Sydney for a week and Melbourne for another. To say that I’m excited is an understatement. Not only are we truly getting away but we’re also going to be traveling abroad (I’ve always wanted to say that). I am fortunate that the CV Weekly staff has assured me – repeatedly – that all will be under control and all right while I’m away. And you know what? I believe them. I work with some of the hardest working, smartest and dedicated people you’ll ever meet. I wonder if they’ll miss me … Sons Andy and Patrick will be keeping the home fires burning and the dogs fed.
I’ll be checking in remotely via my column. For the next two weeks, I’ll be writing from Australia. So forgive me if you read, “I’ve met several dags here” or “I’ve found that things are not too exy here” (dags are funny people and exy is expensive) … at least that’s what I’ve read are useful Australian phrases.
So hooroo, mate (goodbye, friend) – until I find myself back on American soil.

Though my trip to Australia promises to be a good time, there’s plenty I’m going to be missing here. For example, on Saturday is Oktoberfest in Montrose. If you’ve never been to Oktoberfest, Montrose knows how to do it right. From noon to 10 p.m. Honolulu Avenue will host carnival games, rides, an assortment of beer, live music, contests and more. It’s hosted by the Montrose-Verdugo Chamber of Commerce and overseen by dozens of volunteers. This week’s cover story goes into detail of what you’ll find.
And though I will be missing Oktoberfest I was proud to be seated with Camille Levee and friends at last Friday’s luncheon celebrating Business Life Magazine’s 30th anniversary honoring women achievers. A stalwart volunteer, Camille was one of 28 women recognized for their contributions. I was delighted with her selection and also pleased to recognize several names on the roster. Congratulations, all!
