Photo Shoot for a Cause, organized by La Cañada resident Michelle Kimme, takes place at Gallery 1018 this Friday, Oct. 16 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. The event is a photography art show and auction with the proceeds being donated to the families of the two fallen Station fire fighters Captain Tedmund Hall and Specialist Arnaldo “Arnie” Quinones. Most of the artwork is from shoots that took place in the Los Angeles National Forest near Big Tujunga Canyon area. $5 admission fee.

Free Smart Gardening Class from Crescenta Valley Water District is offered by the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works from 9:30 to 11: 30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17. La Cañada Kiwanis annual Travel Adventures series begins Oct. 17. Each program features a popular travel destination. The programs are presented in the auditorium of the Flintridge Preparatory School in La Cañada Flintridge. Season tickets are $40 and tickets for individual performances are $8. All shows are at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening. There will be pre-show entertainment starting at 7:10 p.m.
There will be six programs in the series. The first program is “Bhutan: The Cloud Kingdom” by Tom Sterling. The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA is holding several lectures and events Oct. 17 – Oct. 24 to
promote breast cancer awareness and overall female health. These activities are free to the community and designed to build awareness and educate women on the prevention and treatment of cancer.
Susan Moss, author of Survive Cancer!, will discusses alternate means to staying healthy and fighting cancer from 4 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 17.
More traditional approaches to combat and prevent gynecological cancer will be presented from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 22 by Huntington Hospital Cancer Center physicians. This lecture will also be translated into Korean.

The Glendale-CV Red Cross is hosting its annual Comedy Night emceed by Fritz Coleman on Nov. 1. Coleman and other talented stand-up comics will put on two shows for the benefit of the local Chapter. Show times are 6:15 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. at the Glendale Centre Theatre.
