On Tuesday night, a unique college fair experience will be provided for local students. Sponsored by the Crescenta Valley Town Youth Council and the Fire House, this college fair will not feature the traditional set up of booths and pamphlets from a myriad of higher education institutions. Instead, it will feature a few speakers, including a representative from Glendale Community College, a representative from a private college and a current UC Berkeley attendee.
According to CV Town Youth Council President Cooper Ivans, the one-on-one approach will set it apart from the typical college fair and provide future college students with a deeper understanding of the process than can be gained at other fairs.
“Most college fairs introduce kids to a lot of schools, but don’t help them figure out where they want to go or how to get there,” Ivans said.
The event was planned by members of the CV Town Youth Council and the Fire House teen governing board. Admittance to colleges and universities, especially in California, are getting more and more competitive. The purpose of the fair, according to organizers, is to get as much information as possible to both students and parents.
Speakers will not only include the state colleges but private colleges as well and a discussion on how to navigate college applications and financial aid. Information on a variety of issues, including scholarships, personal statements and tips from parents of college students, will be given.
Students and parents will also be able to talk to the speakers on a one-to-one basis when their presentation has ended.
“It’s the kind of experience that will really help students today,” Ivans said.
The fair will begin at 7 p.m. and is open to the public. Admission is free.
The next day the students can attend the Glendale Unified School District’s College and Career Fair armed with their new knowledge. The GUSD event will be at Glendale Civic Auditorium on Wednesday, Oct. 24 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Parking and admission are free.
The Glendale Civic Auditorium is located at 1401 N. Verdugo Road in Glendale.
