The agency provides a battered women’s shelter that primarily serves women age 18 and older and their children who have been battered, including women from other states who are fleeing a batterer. The shelter also accommodates women with disabilities, including hearing impairments. Women younger than 18 who are legally emancipated and women who have not yet been physically battered, but who are at high risk, are considered for assistance. Women who have abused alcohol or drugs in the past must have been sober or drug-free for at least several months and, preferably, involved in a recovery program, to enter the shelter. Women and their children are eligible to stay 45 days.

Spanish; arrangements can be made for an American Sign Language interpreter.

Call the hotline number to apply for the shelter. If there are special circumstances or considerations involved in the referral of a battered women for the shelter, the caller may ask to speak with the residential supervisor; this may be appropriate, for example, if the women is from out of state or if there are other factors which would indicate special care.

Monday through Sunday, 24 hours per day.

The fee for shelter residents are $1.50 per day per woman, $.50 per day per child, and a $15 cleaning deposit. If the women has no income when she enters the shelter, fees are postponed until she begins to receive AFDC or other income. There is no fee for follow-up services for residents.

Women from out of state are eligible; pregnant women will be considered. The shelter is unable to accommodate women who are severely mentally disturbed. The shelter accepts children to the age of 18. There are no geographic restrictions.

The program provides separate groups for men and women batterers that include education about anger recognition and control, domestic violence, stress reduction, substance abuse and thought restructuring. Groups are ongoing; participants attend for 52 weekly sessions. The program provides reports to the courts and probation department.

Men’s groups are conducted in English, Mandarin, Tagalog and Spanish; women’s groups are conducted in English, Mandarin, Tagalog and Spanish.

Walk in during intake hours to apply. Applicants must present their court case number and papers, driver’s license number and social security number; proof of income is required except for applicants who have been declared indigent by the court. An intake session with a counselor is scheduled before the participant attends a group session.

Intake hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:30pm. Service hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 9:00pm and Saturday, 9:00am to 5:00pm. Group times vary and include evening hours.

Fees are set on a sliding scale that ranges from $20 to $45 per session. There are no fees for participants whom the court has declared indigent.

A woman can participate in up to 10 individual counseling sessions and can be involved in group counseling on an ongoing basis with otherwomenwhoarestrugglingwithsimilarissues. Acommitmenttoattendatleastfour group meetings is requested. Women who attend the group are primarily those who have separated from their batterer. It also provides space for three separate Alanon groups which meet regularly; the meetings are open to anyone who is involved with or concerned about someone who abuses alcohol.

The domestic violence hotline offers support and crisis counseling for battered women and also provides intake for the shelter and other agency services. The hotline gives callers information about domestic violence, substance abuse, and the effects of both on families, and resources that can help the people involved. Staff provide referrals to a variety of services including medical and legal aid, law enforcement, counseling, advocacy, self-help groups, and support services available for battered women, their children, and families of alcoholics.

The battering hotline provides assistance for victims of domestic violence. Services are targeted, but not restricted to TANF recipients, through the CalWORKs program. The program can connect a woman with a battered woman’s shelter and help arrange for same day or next day intake; or in case of immediate danger, the hotline staff can connect the caller with 911 Police assistance. If the caller needs to leave her home and cannot get to a shelter, the program can provide a motel voucher for battered women who are in the San Gabriel Valley. Callers from other areas are referred to programs closer to their location.

The center provides group counseling for batterers, including a 32 and 52 week program for court ordered men and women. Services include anger management classes. Classes run anywhere from 10 to 52 weeks. The center also offers support groups for battered women and provides speakers to community groups about domestic violence prevention.

The victim assistance program provides domestic violence services for battered women in the San Gabriel Valley area. Services include accompaniment services, individual advocacy, mutual support groups, personal financial management counseling, specialized information and referral for domestic violence services such as shelter, and spousal abuse counseling for battered women. Service is restricted to West Covina and surrounding communities.

A Certified Domestic Violence Counselor provides services. A woman may call for assistance or be referred by the police department. The counselor meets with the battered woman to outline a program based on her individual needs. If the woman needs someone to go to court with her, the counselor will provide accompaniment, and will assist in filling out forms and statements. Referrals can be made to shelter, lawyers, ongoing support groups and other community services.

The program provides domestic violence services for people who live in the San Gabriel Valley and surrounding areas. Services spousal abuse counseling for male and female batterers, spousal abuse prevention programs, and groups for women and children who live in violent families. Some services are targeted, but not restricted, to TANF recipients. There are no geographic restrictions.

Domestic violence treatment includes group therapy for male and female batterers, a support group for women living in violent relationships, and groups for children living in violent families. An anger management education program focuses on stopping violence, controlling behavior, managing anger, communicating, and building relationships. The program meets court requirements.

The program also provides special domestic violence services for CalWORKs participants. People who are TANF recipients or TANF-eligible are eligible for this service. Services provided include case management and individual and group spousal abuse counseling. Referrals for legal advocacy and employment services are available as needed.

Armenian, Cantonese, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish Call to apply; an appointment is required for most services.

Monday through Thursday from 8:30am to 9:00pm; Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm; Saturday, 9:00am to 2:00pm. An answering service is available for after-hours messages.

Counseling fees are on a sliding scale from $25 to $85 per session. Low-income families pay no fee or pay on a sliding scale from $0 to $80. There are no fees for speakers; donations are accepted.
