Winter Birds of the Crescenta Valley
The City of Glendale – Community Services and Parks is hosting a lecture highlighting the birds that are in this region during the winter months. Raul Roa, professional photographer and bird watcher, will lead the talk on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 7 a.m. at Deukmejian Park. This program involves a short hike and lecture.
This is a follow-up to the spring program.
All are invited to join an early morning of birding and photography. Attendees are asked to bring binoculars, a bird identification book (these can be checked out from the local library) and a camera with a long lens.
Participants should wear sturdy shoes/boots, hat, sunscreen, protective clothing and bring water.

Y Tree Lot Opens Friday
The Crescenta-Cañada Y will open its Christmas tree lot on Friday and will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The lot is manned by over 200 student volunteers donating in excess of 3,200 hours. All proceeds from this popular and festive event go to help subsidize fees and provide sponsorships for the nearly 250 students who participate in teen leadership programs at the Y.
The Crescenta-Cañada YMCA is located at 1930 Foothill Blvd. in La Cañada.
Winter Shelter Program to Open Dec. 1 in Glendale
Ascencia, Glendale’s only comprehensive homeless services provider, will be operating an 80 bed shelter at the Glendale National Guard Armory starting Dec. 1. Twenty of the 80 beds will be prioritized for residents from Burbank. The shelter will be open through March 1.
This is the first time in many years that the Glendale winter shelter program will be operated by a local provider.
Ascencia’s Winter Shelter Program is funded by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority. The City of Burbank is funding Ascencia’s street outreach effort in Burbank, while the City of Glendale funds Ascencia’s outreach in the City of Glendale.
Sadler Booksigning at Library
Jo Anne Sadler, author of “Crescenta Valley Pioneers & Their Legacies,” will sign copies of her book at the La Crescenta Library on Dec. 1 at 2 p.m.
Sadler will lead a discussion on the book.
