Forum Tonight on What Should CV Adults Know About CV Kids

By Mary O’KEEFE

On Dec. 5, the CV Alliance (formerly the Crescenta Valley Drug and Alcohol Prevention Coalition) will be hosting a forum that shares results of a survey that asked local high school students, “What should CV adults know about CV kids?”

“Many kids here smoke, some parents don’t know it.” “What CV adults should know about CV kids is that they deal with so much stress from classes and they need a moment to relax every now and then.”

Those are two of the over 100 answers given by local kids. The CV Alliance is creating a student panel made up of kids from Prom Plus Club, CV Town Youth Council, the Youth Alliance and Fire House. The students will talk about the answers written, which were gathered anonymously, and have an open discussion with parents and students in the audience.

“It is a way to hear what kids have to say,” said Jessy Shelton, a member of the panel.

Paul Royer, a licensed clinical social worker, will be on hand to help guide the discussion and answer questions from parents.

The date of Dec. 5 was chosen to take advantage of the upcoming holiday break. It is hoped that what is learned at the forum can be discussed with parents and their children over the break.

The forum is the first of a three part series sponsored by the CV Alliance. The next forum will cover medical marijuana and distribution centers and the third will deal with alcohol abuse and availability for teens.

All are invited, both adults and kids, to the free event that is co-sponsored by Prom Plus. The forum will be held today, Thursday, Dec. 5 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library Community Room, 2809 Foothill Blvd.

Light refreshments will be served.
