La Reign Hodges passed away peacefully at 4 p.m. on Feb. 10. She had been battling LMS, a rare cancer, since 2005 and again in 2008.
La Reign was a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, stepmother, cousin and a talented decorator who loved being a part of the Navigators and Women’s Ministry among other things. She was a cherished companion to her beloved husband, Thomas Hodges. Most of all she was a “lady” in every sense of the word: elegant, graceful and gracious.
La Reign was born to Lawrence and Viola Griffiths on Feb. 6, 1946 in Glendale. Her mother was one of the “Rosies” at Lockheed and her dad was in the U.S. Army when they arrived in Glendale in 1944. La Reign attended Glendale schools and kept up with many of her classmates from the classes of ’62 and ’63 and her class of ’64 at Glendale High.
On July 25, 1964 she married Paul Jensen in La Crescenta and from that union they had two children – Christine and Stephen. La Reign lived in Glendale for 50 years doing much for the community as a member of the La Crescenta Woman’s Club, president of the CVHS PTSA, board member of the Glendale College Preschool, and a member of the Republican Women’s Club. She also owned American Alliance Medical, Inc. in Montrose.
After her divorce she married her soul mate Tom Hodges from Valencia and Little Rock, Arkansas. Tom was president for PAC Aero in Burbank when they met in 1993. They married in 1997 in Valencia and opened Eagle Flite Enterprises in 1999. They built a home in Stevenson Ranch and had a home in Big Bear Lake for six years and in Palm Desert, which they still owned before moving to their new home at Trilogy in La Quinta. The couple often entertained their many friends and family members in these homes.
La Reign had a number of talents and interests. She loved entertaining, holidays, world travel, attending movies, decorating and gardening, which was her love of nature. La Reign’s garden in Big Bear was chosen for its beauty in Eagle Point by the Big Bear Garden Club.
La Reign was a skilled and passionate decorator, often surprising her husband with unexpected changes in their home. She loved to help others with decorating and offered valuable counsel on smooth transitions of old to new with minimum stress. She was an assistant to Garvin Eddy, set designer for Carsey-Werner. They worked on “Roseanne,” “Cybill,” “3rd Rock from the Sun,” “That ’70s Show,” “Grounded for Life” and “Cosby” from 1996-2001. Before that she was an assistant to realtor Norma Ellis of Ellis Dilbeck in La Crescenta for over 15 years.
Surviving La Reign at the family home is her husband Tom and her dog Maggie Sue.
She is also survived by her beloved children Christine (Jim) Cancelosi of La Crescenta, Stephan (Lisa) Jensen of La Crescenta, stepdaughter Heather (Colin) Roberts of Texas, and stepson David (Shannon) Hodges of Temecula. Her grandchildren include Kali and Ryan Cancelosi, Jack and Macy Roberts, and Austin and Cody Hodges.
She is also survived by her sister Carol (Peter) Schaller of La Crescenta, brother Jim (Carol) Griffiths of La Crescenta and stepsister Linda (Vic) Tallon of Oregon.
La Reign’s burial will be at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills in the section Eternal Peace. Her service will be held at Desert Springs Church in Palm Desert on April 9 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the church in memory of La Reign Ann Hodges.
