Anna Marie Cannella

Feb. 23, 2019

Anna Marie Cannella passed away peacefully at home in Montrose on Feb. 23 from complications of a stroke. Anna was the firstborn daughter of Vito and Florence Cannella, also of Montrose.

Anna was diagnosed with autism as a toddler during a time when special needs children were hidden away or sent to institutions to be raised. Her parents and family scoffed at that notion; instead, Anna was raised in a big Italian family that showered her with love and opportunities.

Growing up it was evident that Anna’s intellect was special. Her ability to read and absorb information, solve math problems and teach herself Spanish was amazing (for any child, let alone one born with autism). She would follow political campaigns and retain facts about the candidates running. She could meet people once, ask when their birthday was and retain that information and recite it back whenever she met them again. She was an artist; her creations were unique, and she loved to perform in drama productions put on at her day program.

Anna spent more than three decades at a wonderful place called Tierra Del Sol where they filled her days with opportunities and activities. She was truly happy every day she was there and her family was blessed to be a part of this wonderful community of people.

In 2011, Anna suffered her first stroke and her world completely changed. The next eight years brought challenges that would crush many people but her inner strength brought her back to a different life, a life that was supported by her family and a team of caregivers who are angels here on earth.

Anna is survived by her sisters Rosemary Cannella, Grace Chase ( Jay); nephews Matthew Chase (Christa), Brian Chase (Natalie); niece Lauren Brady (Kevin); and eight great nieces and nephews. We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Anna during her 61 years. Through her vulnerabilities, she taught kindness, patience and unconditional love to three generations of one family and countless individuals. She was a blessing here on earth.

A funeral Mass for Anna will be at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 2411 Montrose Ave. in Montrose on Monday, March 4 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Tierra Del Sol Foundation, the place that supported and loved her for over 30 years.
