Bernard “Buz” Anawalt, Jr., a resident of Bishop for 20 years, passed away peacefully at Northern Inyo Hospital in Bishop, Calif. on Aug. 5. Buz, the son of Bernard and Marguerite Anawalt, was born June 18, 1927 in Glendale.
Buz was appointed a midshipman in the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1945 and later attended USC, UCLA and Oregon State. He worked briefly as an administrator at Ford Motor Company before joining the family lumber business. He took over ownership of the Montrose yard of Anawalt Lumber in 1968 and raised his family in La Cañada. He bought the landmark Rocking K Guest Ranch in 1990 and then made Bishop his home for over 20 years.
He enjoyed fishing and moving dirt on his backhoe at the ranch.
He is survived by his wife Carol Ann, daughter Jo Jared and her son Christopher, son William Anawalt, his wife Sasha and their three children Katharine, Thomas and Lucy Anawalt, and his brother Hal Anawalt.
A private celebration of his life will be held later this year in Bishop.
