Helen Scully

July 5, 1925 to Sept. 3, 2023

Helen Scully passed away peacefully at her home on Sept. 3. Helen was born in Lincoln, Nebraska to Dwight W. Holcomb and Lillian Holcomb. She was the youngest of their three children. Her parents and her two siblings, Elaine Godwin and Richard Holcomb, have predeceased her.

Helen moved to Glendale when she was 12 years old and attended Toll Junior High, Hoover High School and Glendale College.

In 1950 Helen married William J. “Bill” Scully. They were married for 63 years when Bill died. Helen is survived by their four children: William J. Scully (Diane), Daniel P. Scully, Nancy H. Berger (Brad, deceased), and Timothy S. Scully. Helen and Bill have eight grandchildren: Jill Woodman (Nick), Jeremiah Scully (Courtney), Jessica Kozol (Devlyn), Bethany Scully, Gabriel Scully, Paul Marcus “Mark” Berger (Jesse), Nicholas Berger (Erin) and Brooke Gunness (Thomas); and 19 great-grandchildren: Hugo, Duke and Bodhi Woodman; Sawyer, Ava, Mia, Audrey, Elsie and Quincy Scully; Chase, Charley, Trent and Liza Kozol; Darby, Max and Lyla Berger; Peter (deceased), Lucy and Annie Gunness.

Bill and Helen also had three foster daughters: Lorna Moore (Dan McGilvray), Glynis Moore and Carin Moore.

Helen worked for the phone company as an operator for 15 years, ending her work career as the book buyer for Glendale College.

Helen’s life revolved around her church and her family. The members of her church would look forward to her warm smile, her hugs and her fashion sense. She loved clothes and sparkly jewelry. She was at every family function that she could attend even flying back and forth to Oregon well into her 90s. We all loved her positive attitude and happy disposition. We were always in her thoughts and prayers. She will be missed by her family and so many others that she touched along the way. She had a long happy life.

A celebration of her life will be held on Oct. 18 at 10:30 a.m. at Highlands Church, 4441 La Crescenta Ave. in La Crescenta. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Descanso Gardens or Habitat for Humanity.
