Verna Bates passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at her home. She lived in the Crescenta Valley since 1950 and relocated here from Michigan with her husband, Harley Bates, who preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 2013.
They were married in Tyler, Texas while Harley was still in the Army on Verna’s 21st birthday – Oct. 6, 1943. She resided on Lowell Avenue in Glendale for the past 45 years. It was her fourth home in La Crescenta.
Verna went to Michigan State University, studying home economics. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in La Crescenta since 1967.
She volunteered for many things at the church, and was a bookkeeper at home, worked at Cozette’s in Montrose and for Skousen’s Tax Service for 11 years. She and Harley enjoyed traveling, working with the Sounds of Purpose choir at the church, and being with the many friends they made at the church over the years.
Verna enjoyed a variety of hand crafts – sewing, quilting, crewel pictures, pastel drawings, flower arranging and more. She is survived by her daughter Colette Bates and extended family.
A memorial celebration of Verna’s life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 11 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in La Crescenta downstairs in the Fellowship Hall at 4444 La Crescenta Ave., La Crescenta.
