This Week at LCIF

Lutheran Church in the Foothills continues its Lenten journey. On Sunday, March 15, all ages are invited to gather at 9 a.m. for Bible study. At 10 a.m., Stephen Robertson, CYF director, will lead worship with his sermon called “Jesus, the Original Thirst Quencher.” All are welcome!

Continue the Lenten journey each Wednesday with Lent prayer worship at 10 a.m., soup supper at 6 p.m., Holden evening prayer at 7 p.m. and Anthem Chorale rehearsal at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend any or all of these events – it’s all free and all are invited!

‘Lamb of God’ Oratorio

The “Lamb of God” oratorio by Rob Gardner will be performed by a coalition of churches in the extended Crescenta Valley, hosted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, on March 14 and 15, a few weeks before Easter, at 7 p.m. in La Crescenta.

This magnificent musical portrays the final week of Christ’s life. These free performances will be accompanied by a live, professional orchestra and 50-plus voice choir conducted by the famed James Thatcher of the Pasadena Symphony. Vocal soloists include Broadway professionals Michael Thatcher, Kevin Odekirk and Adam Daveline.

There will also be a Christian art display, including pieces by local artists.

The performances are free of charge.

Glendale City Church presents ‘Elegies and Ecstasies’

On March 12 at 8 p.m., New York-based composer/pianist Robert Sirota and Los Angeles-based composer/violist Jonah Sirota present individual works and the West Coast premiere of a new collaboration at Glendale City Church. This concert is part of the Sirota @ 70 season, marking Robert Sirota’s 70th birthday with concerts, commissions and residencies across the country.

In addition to the new collaboration between the two composers, the concert will include Robert Sirota’s “Elegy for a Lost World” and “Compendium de Lumine,” both composed for Jonah Sirota, as well as Jonah Sirota’s “Viola Sonata Flutter Fingers” and Jonah Sirota/Kurt Knecht’s “CURRENTly.”

New Classes at La Crescenta Presbyterian

La Crescenta Presbyterian Church invites the community to participate in new classes offered as part of its Praise and Education for Adults and Kids (PEAK) program on Wednesday evenings.

Two new small groups have been formed: For Parents provides a space for those raising a family to share their experiences and support one another in a fun, encouraging environment. Share Your Faith will use the book “God Space” to coach individuals who want to start spiritual conversations to share the love of Jesus.

The winter/spring session of PEAK will also include adult classes for those new to faith, for parents and high school students seeking to find and fund the right college and for those seeking in-depth Bible study.

Weekly programming is also offered for children from infant age through middle school.

The free one-hour PEAK classes begin at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Come early for a delicious and nutritious meal beginning at 5:45 p.m. Cost for the dinner is $3 for adults and $2 for children sixth grade or younger.

God’s Closet Offers Free Children’s Clothing

God’s Closet in Tujunga will be having a free giveaway of children’s clothing on Sunday, March 15 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

There is an entrance fee of $1 per family, not per person, and a shopping bag is provided.

Free clothes will be available for newborn to teenagers (gently-used clothes and shoes) at Sunland-Tujunga Seventh-day Adventist Church, 7156 Valmont St.

 

 

Walk and Word

Spend time Sunday mornings discovering Scripture while hiking Deukmejian Park. Participants meet at 8 a.m. at the parking lot (3429 Markridge Road, La Crescenta) on all but the first Sunday of each month.

Hike for an hour, then journal and share for an hour about a selection of Scripture. All are invited who feel drawn to this alternative spiritual activity under the guidance of CV United Methodist Church lay minister Jeanne Lavieri.

For those interested but unable to hike, several picnic tables with wheelchair access are available.

Catholics Invited

ICF, the Italian Catholic Federation, is looking for members. ICF is a family-oriented, non-profit fraternal organization dedicated to promoting activities that build faith and family spirit and bring men, women and children of all ages together. The branch members extend an invitation to La Crescenta, Tujunga and Sunland Catholics to join the local ICF branch and share your culture, heritage and religious beliefs. The only prerequisite for joining is being Catholic. Our members are from many ethnics groups.

ICF is active in various cultural events throughout the state, supports local parishes, and provides various charities with financial and other support. ICF members believe in proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ through community and spiritual actions, activities and camaraderie.

Bethel Church Hosts Screening of ‘Breakthrough’ 

On Sunday, March 29, Bethel Church will offer a showing of the film “Breakthrough” (rated PG). In this fact-based drama, 14-year-old John Smith falls through a frozen lake and is pronounced dead after 27 minutes of CPR fail to revive him. But his mother is having none of it and prays loudly at John’s bedside – until his heart begins beating.

The video presentation starts at 5:30 p.m. A potluck supper precedes the movie at 5 p.m. Free.
