On Saturday, July 22 the La Crescenta congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints celebrated Pioneer Day commemorating the entry of Brigham Young and the first group of Mormon Pioneers into Utah’s Great Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847.
Hand-made pies were the order of the day as some 100 church members toting chairs and blankets gathered at the Church’s La Cañada building field on Foothill Boulevard for a pioneer picnic of games and dessert. Lemon pies, strawberry pies, blueberry pies, pumpkin pies, chocolate pies and cheesecake filled tummies, socializing fed the soul.
Pioneer Day is an official holiday that is celebrated on July 24 in Utah.
