First Church of Christ, Scientist, La Cañada Flintridge, announced the election of new readers for its church services.
Jennifer Essen, long time resident of La Cañada Flintridge and graphic designer, is the new first reader. Jane Boessen, Sunland resident and elementary school educator, is the newly elected second reader. These democratically elected lay readers serve for a one-year term.
Essen runs the 10 a.m. Sunday service and reads from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
Boessen reads from the Bible. The two books are the Christian Science “pastor.” The weekly subjects are studied during the week by interested Bible students in many languages worldwide. This lesson is then the Sunday sermon, read aloud by the two readers. The service also includes hymns and prayers.
Wednesday evening meetings, held in La Cañada Flintridge at 8 p.m., are similar to Sunday services but the first reader runs the meeting on his or her own, gathering Scriptural readings customized to the needs of the congregation, the occasion and the community. Attendees will also hear insights, experiences, and healings shared by attendees as a result of their prayers and study of Christian Science.
The local church at 600 Foothill Blvd. also has an active Sunday school at 10 a.m. for children and young people through their 19th year. Childcare is available for those too young for Sunday school or church.
