Lutheran Church Prepares for ‘Trunk or Treat’

Lutheran Church in the Foothills (LCIF) is gearing up for its annual “Trunk or Treat” event on Sunday, Oct. 27 from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. This festive celebration is open to the entire community and will feature an array of fun activities for all ages.

Children can look forward to trick-or-treating, games, a bounce house and plenty of treats. The event is free of charge and offers a safe and enjoyable environment for families to celebrate Halloween. For those attending LCIF’s regular Sunday worship beforehand (at 10 a.m.), costumes are welcome.

Additionally, LCIF invites all attend its weekly T.O.W.N. gatherings. T.O.W.N. stands for “Time Together on Wednesdays.” These gatherings provide a welcoming and inclusive space for individuals to connect with one another, deepen their faith and build lasting relationships. The next T.O.W.N. will be held on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. in the church’s conference room. Pastor

Rick Hall will lead a discussion on the Old Testament. For those unable to attend in person, a Zoom link is provided on LCIF’s website.

UUCVH to Host Philanthropist And Community Leader

On Oct. 20 the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Verdugo Hills (UUCVH) welcomes Tangela Terry will encourage the audience to remain focused on goals in the midst of challenges. Her presentation, The Pivot, begins at 10:30 a.m. With her clinical psychology background, Terry has mastered the art of creating a safe space and consistently benefiting individuals in all age groups. Her vision and tenacity yield undeniable prestige from all around her.

St. Bede the Venerable Hosting ‘Grounding Your Family in Catholic Faith’

St. Bede the Venerable in La Cañada Flintridge will host the family workshop “Grounding Your Family in Catholic Faith” featuring guest speaker and author Angela Grey on Sunday, Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Church. There will be a reception and book signing immediately following the workshop.

While there is no cost to attend, suggested donation of $20 per family is requested. All are welcome.

Trunk or Treat and Pumpkin Decorating at La Crescenta Presbyterian

La Crescenta Presbyterian Church is hosting an afternoon of “trunk-or-treating,” pumpkin decorating and activities for the entire family on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.  

Kids can come in costume and collect treats from festively decorated cars then carve or paint a pumpkin at this free event, which will take place on the church campus at 2902 Montrose Ave. in La Crescenta.

Costumes must be family friendly – no play weapons or offensive themes. Don’t forget to bring a bag or bucket to collect treats!

Death Wishes: UUCVH To Host Prominent Author

On Oct. 27 at 10:30 a.m. author and cultural proficiency consultant Rev. Kikanza Nuri-Robins will talk about the inevitability of death and what can be done about it.

Everyone is going to die, but few want to talk about it. People refuse to write wills, complete advanced care directives and tell their loved ones about their end of life preferences. How might we navigate this sensitive subject with grace and compassion? Nuri-Robins has authored six books, including: “Cultural Proficiency” and “Fish Out of Water.” She serves on the Bio-Ethics Committee of the UCLA Medical Center and the boards of several social-service organizations.

Halloween Haunted House at Church of Scientology Mission of the Foothills

On Halloween night, the community is invited to a free, kid-friendly fun and slightly spooky haunted house maze on Oct. 31 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Church of Scientology Mission of the Foothills. A free professional photo booth photo opportunity is offered to every family, along with lots of candy as visitors explore a graveyard, spidery room, witch’s room and more – all free of charge – the Church’s annual gift to the community.

Mt. Olive Offers A Breakfast Bible Study & A Community Lunch

Mt. Olive Lutheran Church is having a trunk or treat event on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. This is a free event.

Mt. Olive also invites the Crescenta Valley community to its monthly breakfast Bible study at Panera Bread Restaurant, 990 Town Center Drive, Suite A in La Cañada on the third Saturday of each month at 8:30 a.m. A study of the Book of Second Corinthians will begin on Nov. 16. 

Also, a weekly Bible study is held at the church on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. 

Lastly, Mt. Olive offers a community luncheon every second Wednesday through May. For a suggested minimum donation of $5, a delicious lunch is offered including a brief uplifting devotion and some great entertainment provided by various local artists.

Walk and Word

Walk and Word participants will meet in the parking lot of Deukmejian Wilderness Park, 3429 Markridge Road in La Crescenta/Glendale at 8 a.m. on Oct. 20 & 27. Participants will walk for the first hour and then gather to read a selection of Scripture. About a half hour will be spent journaling about what was read and then there will be conversation, sharing thoughts.

Participants are asked to bring something to write with, anything wanted to eat or drink, and a chair to use for the writing part of the morning. Because people will be outdoors and social distancing will be practiced, masks will be optional.

All are welcome. If the hike is too strenuous, there are level paths at the park. There are ramps from the parking lot to the field where the group gathers after the hike.
