On a recent Saturday, the children’s department at Light on the Corner Church hosted its first annual Grandparents’ Day, an afternoon full of activities meant to draw grandparents and their grandkids closer.

“We want to create a space where different generations can have fun at the same time,” said Kiana Karn, Children’s director. “What better place to do that than at church?”

The day’s activities included a photo booth, Looney Tunes on the big screen, The Beatles: Rock Band and even a few old fashioned rotary phones were brought out for grandparents to show the kids for a change how to work technology. Attendees were able to wear their best “old–timey” outfits to the event, if they wished. Young ones who didn’t have any grandparents living or nearby were paired up with elderly church members who became their substitute grandparents for the day. Many memorable bonds were made.

“I guess I have a lot more cousins now,” remarked Jaxon Fort, 10, to Judy Haley, his grandma for the day and longtime teacher at Lincoln Elementary. Haley’s own grandchildren live out of town and were not able to attend. Jaxon has now become a part of her family.

Free to the public, the event will become an ongoing tradition for Light on the Corner Church each fall to welcome members of the local community who may or may not have a church home. All generations are invited to attend on Sunday mornings at 10:45 a.m., where they will be met with quality children’s programs, fun music and a friendly atmosphere.
