Lutheran Church Prepares for ‘Trunk or Treat’

Lutheran Church in the Foothills is inviting all high school students to join in its new youth hangouts. Led by Pastor Rick Hall, these gatherings offer a casual and welcoming environment for teens to connect, play games, enjoy snacks and listen to music. The goal is to create a space where young people can simply be themselves and feel a sense of belonging. The hangouts are open to all high school students, regardless of religious affiliation. Everyone is encouraged to bring a friend or two. The next hangout is scheduled for Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. in the Youth Room.

Death Wishes: UUCVH To Host Prominent Author

On Oct. 27 at 10:30 a.m. author and cultural proficiency consultant Rev. Kikanza Nuri-Robins will talk about the inevitability of death and what can be done about it.

Everyone is going to die, but few want to talk about it. People refuse to write wills, complete advanced care directives and tell their loved ones about their end of life preferences. How might we navigate this sensitive subject with grace and compassion? Nuri-Robins has authored six books, including: “Cultural Proficiency” and “Fish Out of Water.” She serves on the Bio-Ethics Committee of the UCLA Medical Center and the boards of several social-service organizations.

UUCVH is located at 4451 Dunsmore Ave. in La Crescenta. To join via Zoom visit the UUCVH website at https://www.uuverdugo.org/.

Walk and Word participants will meet in the parking lot of Deukmejian Wilderness Park, 3429 Markridge Road in La Crescenta/Glendale at 8 a.m. on Oct. 27. Participants will walk for the first hour and then gather to read a selection of Scripture. About a half hour will be spent journaling about what was read and then there will be conversation, sharing thoughts.

Participants are asked to bring something to write with, anything wanted to eat or drink, and a chair to use for the writing part of the morning. Because people will be outdoors and social distancing will be practiced, masks will be optional.

Those with questions can email Jeanne at jnlavieri@earthlink.net.

All are welcome. If the hike is too strenuous, there are level paths at the park. There are ramps from the parking lot to the field where the group gathers after the hike.
