Lutheran Church to Take Part in Free Concert

The Anthem Chorale from Lutheran Church in the Foothills (LCIF) will be among several choirs performing in a free concert to honor veterans and promote unity.

“United We Stand! A Veterans Day Musical Tribute” will be held on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. at 4550 Raymond Ave. in La Crescenta. The event is a collaborative effort between the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (La Crescenta), LCIF, Holy Redeemer-St. James the Less Catholic Church and other local churches. The Anthem Chorale will present two anthems then join other churches for the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” All are invited to this patriotic event.

Additionally, LCIF invites the community to its weekly Wednesday night social gatherings, known as TOWN (Together on Wednesday Night).

Bakers will especially enjoy the gathering on Nov. 13. Come to the church’s Fellowship Hall at 7 p.m. to get a jump on Thanksgiving pie baking. Community members are encouraged to bake pies to either take home or donate to the church’s Thanksgiving Eve Service and Pie Social on Nov. 27 at 7 p.m.

And, to help make the Thanksgiving holiday brighter for people in need, LCIF is collecting non-perishable food items. Donations can be dropped off during regular Sunday worship with Pastor Rick Hall at 10 a.m. or during the week at the church office.

Visit lcifoothills.org for event details. For more information or to request/offer help, email office@lcifoothills.org or call (818) 790-1951. The church is located at 1700 Foothill Blvd in La Cañada Flintridge.

Office hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Embracing the Awkward Moments

Unitarian Universalist Church of the Verdugo Hills (UUCVH) will host author and tarot practitioner on Nov. 10 at 10:30 a.m. Non-binary disabled author of “Your Tarot Toolkit,” Ru-Lee Weller-Passman will discuss ways to build a resilient community.

When we misspeak and hurt someone, we may react from a place of shame and defensiveness. When we are hurt by someone’s words, we may lash out or shut down to protect ourselves. These moments feel awkward and overwhelming, but they are also opportunities to build trust instead of distance.

UUCVH is located at 4451 Dunsmore Ave. in La Crescenta. To join via Zoom visit the UUCVH website to learn more: https://www.uuverdugo.org/.

Also, a weekly Bible study is held at the church on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m.

Lastly, Mt. Olive offers a community luncheon every second Wednesday through May. For a suggested minimum donation of $5, a delicious lunch is offered including a brief uplifting devotion and some great entertainment provided by various local artists.

Mt. Olive is located at 3561 Foothill Blvd. in La Crescenta.

Walk and Word

Walk and Word participants will meet in the parking lot of Deukmejian Wilderness Park, 3429 Markridge Road in La Crescenta/Glendale at 8 a.m. on Nov. 10, 17, & 24. Participants will walk for the first hour and then gather to read a selection of Scripture. About a half hour will be spent journaling about what was read and then there will be conversation, sharing thoughts.

Participants are asked to bring something to write with, anything wanted to eat or drink, and a chair to use for the writing part of the morning. Because people will be outdoors and social distancing will be practiced, masks will be optional.

Those with questions can email Jeanne at jnlavieri@earthlink.net.

All are welcome. If the hike is too strenuous, there are level paths at the park. There are ramps from the parking lot to the field where the group gathers after the hike.
