Lady Falcons Team Up to Crush Hoover, 7-0

By Alan Der OHANNESSIAN

With five different players scoring, twice by Whitley Boller and Sierra Rhodes, the Crescenta Valley girls’ soccer team easily beat Hoover 7-0 at CV on Wednesday.

“We had a lot of opportunities, together as a team,” said assistant coach Tyrasha Peterson.

With the win, the Falcons improved their record to 13-3-1 overall, 10-1 in the Pacific League. CV beat Muir Jan. 25 16-0 and got by Burbank 3-1 on Monday.

The Falcons were aggressive Wednesday from the get-go and never looked back.

Just after kick-off, Rhodes found fellow midfielder Rachel Bird wide inside the 10 yards, but the defense managed to tackle the ball away.

Peterson yelled instruction from the sidelines: “Get aggressive ladies, and come on.”

The Falcons took her advice and scored in the ninth minute of the first half. On a corner kick, Lisa Kang put the header to the upper right of the goalkeeper, beyond her reach.

Rhodes’ shot 12 yards from the net, but it sailed just wide to the right side of the goalkeeper.

Defender Karina Costilla found Bird for an open shot, but the defense rose to the occasion and managed to block it. Though the first half was winding down, CV was far from done and started its scoring barrage.

Boller managed to get the ball out of a scramble and put it past the goalkeeper 20 yards away in the 34th minute. Two minutes later, Katie Callister got the ball out of another scramble within five yards and put it past the goalkeeper for a commanding lead.

In the 39th minute, forward Ani Hemelians raced past the defender and took advantage of a mistake by the goalkeeper to score the fourth goal as the first half came to a close.

The second half didn’t look any more promising for the Tornadoes. Within five minutes, Rhodes dribbled inside the penalty box and put it past the goalkeeper. She scored again in the 17th minute when she was left unguarded and raced with the ball past a hapless defender and put it past the goalkeeper.

With five minutes remaining in the match, Boller scored the seventh goal for the Falcons.

The Falcons play at Burroughs on Friday at 5 p.m.
