Last week, the Crescenta Valley High School varsity girls’ basketball team finished off its league season with a 10-4 record, placing them in a three-way tie for second place with Pasadena and Burroughs. As the team prepares for the first round of CIF, it took some time to reflect on the season.
Today, the Falcons will play at Kennedy High School at 7 p.m. If the Falcons continue to keep their momentum and take the win, it will send them into round two of CIF.
“We had an outstanding season and learned a lot about not only how we play individually, but as a team as well,” said senior captain Georgina Kregorian. “We grew to be one of the best defensive teams in our league.”
Kregorian, alongside co-captains Alin Mazmanian and Caity Bouchard, credited much of their success to the strong chemistry and mental aspects of the game.
“A concept we have this year is ‘next play,’ which essentially means to focus on the next play and don’t get caught up in your mistakes,” Mazmanian said. “I think that along with the positive energy on the court it has really pushed this team to the next level.”
CV finished the year 17-10 overall and 10-4 in the Pacific League, tied for second place with Pasadena. The Falcons are excited to see what’s in store for them in playoffs and are confident that their defense and energy will take them far.
“If we play with the aggression and fast tempo [with which] we’ve been playing, we have a strong chance of getting another CIF win this year,” Bouchard said. “As long as we work together and keep the momentum we have, we’re going to be successful.”
The Falcons boys’ basketball team will host its first playoff game on Friday at 7 p.m. against Diamond Ranch. Coach Shawn Zargarian’s team finished 23-4 overall, 11-3 in league. The boys performed outstandingly most the season, with solid guard play from Tyler Carson and Andreyas Boghossian, and were helped by big guys down low in Harout Tahanian and Chuck Meyer, giving the Falcons more size and strength than they’ve had in recent seasons.
CV was second in league behind undefeated Pasadena. The team won its final game of the year on Friday at Arcadia 59-42, its ninth straight win. If the team wins, it’ll play on Tuesday and take on the winner of West and Culver City.
