Falcons face their first track and field League meet on Thursday against Burroughs

After a very strong League and CIF presentation in cross-country, the CV boys and girls will face their first strong opposition against Burroughs, which has demonstrated a well-rounded team over these last few years. The distance team will give a great amount of depth, as the athletes will participate in the various16 events. The Falcons at Crescenta Valley starting promptly at 3:30pm will host the meet.

The difficulty over the last few months as Coach Evans explained, is that “the rain made us do a lot of alternative workouts.”

As southern California received over 15 inches of rain over these last winter months, instead of what would have been normal track workouts the coaches had to be creative and address workouts for preparation essential for the up and coming season. Runners turned to using the gym for inside workouts, giving more credence to long distance workouts and weight training and postponing sprint workouts on the track.

CV juniors and seniors will be a make a large portion of this year’s varsity team. Distance runners, Junior Dylan Wilbur and Senior Matt Vats will participate in the 3200m and 1600m as well as the 800m races. Wilbur posted in the end of the season a personal best time of 1:55.9 800m at League conference finals last year in May. Sprinters will include Seniors Casey Chantrapanichkul and Esai Bribiesca, and Juniors Talon Carvalho and Niko Pravikoff. The hurdles lead runner Senior Vince Lieberman should make a valuable effort. The long jump and triple jump will include Juniors Ethan Hizon and Max Nelson. The shot put and discus will be headed by Senior Mike Bomar, and Sophomore Leighton Ong Yiu.

The girl’s distance team which had much success in the cross-country season will be led by Junior Sophia Atin and Senior Gaby Borraez.  Eliza Clark should have a strong contribution and has been very successful these last years running the 100H and 300I, along with Junior Priya Riley. The lead sprinter falls to Junior Faith Sales. The long jump and triple jump include Seniors Trinidy Charler, and Eliza Clark.  Coach Evans looks very optimistic on many more up and coming athletes who will contribute to the success of this year’s team.
