A journey that started more than 10 months ago with conditioning, strengthening and endurance resulted in top performances by Crescenta Valley High School athlete Dylan Wilbur at the Pacific League track and field finals.
The League finals were held on Thursday, April 25 at Arcadia High School on one of Southern California’s best all-season tracks. Facing many strong runners in the League, the Falcon varsity and frosh/soph athletes were ready to perform solidly.
CV’s top performance of the evening came from junior Wilbur who, with two strong seasons already under his belt for the Falcons, took control of both the1600m and 800m races. Running with teammates Grant Lauterback and Ameer Mohammed, along with Glendale’s lead runner Arvin Sales, the pace was quick. Wilbur’s strength proved too much for the competition as he crossed the finish line winning with a PR time of 4:21.94; Sales placed second (4:22.77) followed by Lauterback (4:23.17) and Mohammed (4:23.25).
In his second event, the 800m, Wilbur also had another PR performance running a time of 1:54.73. His split times were 55 seconds, returning with a 59 second lap. Apache Anthony Carranza put forth a strong effort as he assisted in pushing the pace to place second (1:55.61).
Falcon senior Manan Vats moved forward in competition to grab third place in the 3200m running 9:28.37, while teammate Erik Faeustle placed sixth (9:45.80). Sophomore Leighton Ong Yiu placed fifth in the shot put with a 36-09.00 throw.
The Falcon varsity girls also secured many top marks. Sophia Atin, who has been a strong presence all season, secured a dual second win running against Apache Joyce Wu in both the 1600m and 3200m races. Wu won the 1600m in 5:11.70 and the 3200m in 11:21.41. Atin recorded a time of 5:15.43 in the 800m and 11:34.08 in the 3200m.
Falcon Samantha Moore executed a top performance to place third in the 1600m (5:18.87) and sixth in the 3200m (11:57.76). Priya Riley put points on the scoreboard in the 100H running 17.11 to take third with teammate Eliza Clark placing fifth (17.94) and second in the 300H running 47.68.
Ily Nelson took third in the 800m running 2:20.28 and teammate Gaby Borraez, a senior, placed fifth running 2:27.04. Dylana Wolf had a successful throw in the shot put with a 30-04.00 put to claim second.
The frosh/soph had several top performances in both the boys’ and girls’ events. The girls’ 4 x100m relay, with a team composed of Isabella Reyes, Angela Kim, Julia Sanbar and Katelyn Wang, won the event in 51.89, with Burbank placing second followed by Arcadia. Reyes won the 100m in 13.32 to grab second in the 200m running 28.10. In the 800m, CV swept the top spots with Rebecca Doherty grabbing the win (2:29.21) followed by teammates Sarah Nakama (2:29.95), Sarah Guzman (2:33.50) and Emma Walch (2:34.15).
Rachel Arias placed second in the 100H running 16.7 and won the 300H with an excellent time of 47.22. Teleya Blunt won the 400m in 101.68.
The 4×400 relay team composed of Blunt, Doherty, Sarah Guzman and Kelly Helton won in a time of 4:14.79.
Chris Cubias placed second in the 1600m with a time of 4:38.49 and Rowan FitzGerald took fourth in the 800m (2:05.85).
On May 4, the CIF prelims will be held at Trabuco Hills High School with field events at 11 a.m. and running starting at noon.
