fter sharing the Pacific League championship in 2016, the Crescenta Valley Falcon baseball team earned an outright title this season after a 1-0 victory over rival Arcadia Tuesday night at Stengel Field.
It is the fifth League championship for CV since the 2012 season.
The only run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth when Trevor Beer led off with a single. Nico Arredondo sacrificed Beer to second base, and then Max Meyer lined a hit down the first base side to bring in Beer.
Beer also came in to pitch in relief of starter Drew Atherton in the sixth and seventh innings to close out the game.
Arcadia’s Jacob Kampen took the hard-luck loss. He went six innings with five strikeouts. Atherton was also solid, only allowing two hits in his five innings.
The Falcons (25-1, 13-0 in league) have been dominant all season, and are riding a 23-game winning streak. They play Arcadia once again on Friday at the Apaches’ field, 7 p.m. in the regular season finale. Arcadia can still claim sole possession of second place with a win. The CIF Division II playoffs begin next week.
The CV softball team is in a battle with Burroughs for the Pacific League crown. Both squads are 11-2, tied for first, with Arcadia (10-3) right behind. The Falcons host Arcadia today at 3:30 p.m. in the season finale. Burroughs plays Burbank today at 6 p.m. If CV wins, it will assure itself of at least a shared championship. It would be Amanda Peek’s first title in the three years she’s been head coach.
After a walk-off win over Whittier on May 2, the Village Christian baseball team had the tables turned in the next game three days later as Whittier walked off with the win 5-4. The Crusaders turned it around on Tuesday, though, beating Maranatha 3-2. The win guarantees them at least a share of the Olympic League title.
Village stands at 7-2 in league, 19-5 overall.
Pitcher Eric Oseguera went six and two-thirds innings on Tuesday, allowing one earned run and striking out eight batters. Village led 3-0 heading into the seventh when Maranatha rallied for two runs, but Tobias Plotkin came on in relief and got the last out, stranding runners on the corners for the Minutemen.
The Crusaders are at Maranatha today at 6 p.m. to wrap up the season. If they win, they’ll secure an outright League title.
CV Lacrosse Bows Out
The Falcon girls’ lacrosse team lost to Newbury Park 15-8 in the first round of the lacrosse championship playoffs on May 2. Sydney Bumbarger had seven goals for the Panthers to lead all scorers. The Falcons, led by seniors Abby Sheklow and Leah Crowther, were 14-5 in the regular season and won the Pacific League with a 4-0 record.
