CV Hall of Fame Recognizes Eight

The Crescenta Valley High School Athletic Hall of Fame inducted eight athletes to the Class of 2019. Held at the Oakmont Country Club on Saturday, May 4, the event celebrated the success of accomplished athletes in a variety of sports.

Introductions were made by former head football coach Paul Schilling and Leland Waters. Early on, inductees, family and friends met at the CV main gymnasium to unveil the individual plaques that now line the wall over the school’s trophy case. Since 2008, the CV Hall of Fame has dedicated itself to elect and honor individuals, teams and coaches who have made significance contributions to the school in the field of athletics. CV had been well known for having some of the highest caliber of athletes who not only flourished while in high school but were also successful in college athletic programs with some advancing to pro sports.

This year’s inductees were Megan Winchell Bonfield, Jeanine Demo, Dustin Emmons, Jason Hogan, Pat Kennelly, Leilani Artis Soifua and Zack Torres.

Bonfield was CV’s first female varsity letter recipient in both water polo and swimming in all four years while at CVHS. Her achievements in both sports set the bar high for others. She was one of the top breaststrokers in the Pacific League.

Jeanine Deno, a 2004 graduate, was a 5’6” basketball player averaging 18 points a game and who scored 38 points in her first CIF playoff as a freshman. She led the Pacific League in scoring in her sophomore, junior and senior seasons. She also played varsity softball all four years and was awarded all Pacific League and All CIF honors in her junior and senior seasons.

Dustin Emmons, a 2007 graduate, could be found on the basketball court all four years. He was named All-Pacific League honoree every year. As a sophomore in 2005, he was named 1st Team Division 1 All-CIF. He was named Division 1 All-CIF in 2006 and 2007.

From 1998 through 2001, Jason Hogan was a two-sport standout in both football and track. He is second on the all-time single season reception list. He holds the 10th fastest time in the 400m and is also on the top 10 list for his 200m.

Pat Kennelly graduated in 1990. He was a top football player whose work ethic and competitive spirit earned the respect of his coaches, teammates and competitors. He was team captain in both his junior and senior years and 1st Team All Pacific League, LA Times All Area 1st team, Pacific League Defensive Player of the Year.

Chris Schrobilgen graduated in 1967 after being named the most valuable player for the junior varsity team in 1965 in basketball. He received 1st Team All Foothill league honors on varsity for the 1966 and 1967 seasons. He also earned All CIF honors.

Leilani Artis Soifua, Class of 1998, played softball, participated in track and field, and was a standout on the volleyball and basketball teams as well as a talented choir member.

Zack Torres, a graduate in the Class of 2009. In addition to playing baseball, he earned numerous awards in cross-country and track. He earned nine Pacific League team and individual titles, 11 varsity letters in cross-country, track and baseball. He was an individual cross-country league champion in 2007 and 2008. His 4:13 mile led him to the Pacific League Mile Champion in 2008 and 2009. He is the No. 2 record holder for the 1600m and 3200m.
