On Friday, Sept. 24, the CVHS Falcons played the La Cañada Spartans in an emotionally charged battle. Bringing to the field not only a focus on playing the game, the team was also grappling with the loss earlier in the week of long time CV coach Gordon Warnock who passed away in his sleep.
The Falcons varsity team members were determined to win for their lost coach. With La Cañada holding the lead and with just under a minute to play, the Falcons Maro Lee took the ball, avoiding several defenders on his way into the end zone to give CV the lead. Despite the Falcons celebration, the game was not over yet. But with seconds left, Falcons #72 senior Bryan Luna with an interception took away any hope the Spartans may have had of a come back, sealing the Falcons victory.
In a farewell to their coach, after the victory the Falcons team members released blue balloons with their numbers written on them in memory of Coach Warnock. Making the event even more emotional was that Warnock was the freshmen head coach four years ago, when the majority of the varsity squad joined the football program at CV.
