Only four more teams stand in the way of the Crescenta Valley High School varsity football team as it continues its path to the CIF playoffs. The Falcons sit at a perfect 6-0 after defeating Pasadena High School on Friday by a final score of 48-33. PHS fell to 1-5 on its season.
It was the Cole Doyle show on Friday night. The junior quarterback played what was perhaps his best game ever as a Falcon. He led the team in passing and rushing and was responsible for all six of the Crescenta Valley touchdowns.
Doyle and senior wide receiver Tyler Lobianco continued to improve their working chemistry. The duo partnered for eight receptions that went for 157 yards and three scores. Tight end Austin Novak maintained his reputation as a solid target with 57 yards and a touchdown on four receptions.
Senior running back Joe Suh had an easy workload for the night, though he still averaged six yards a carry. But it was Doyle who stole the show on the ground with 13 carries for 108 yards and one more touchdown.
Crescenta Valley has seen great quarterbacks since the turn of the century. Brian Gadsby, who now pitches for UCLA, set school records that were previously held by current offensive coordinator Hudson Gossard. But neither Gadsby nor Gossard possessed the nobility that Doyle brings to the field. This extra factor in his game is what gives CV’s offense the edge it will need to win another CIF title.
Looking ahead, CV has its toughest two games of the season when it faces Burroughs High School and Burbank High School. Burroughs will be up first on Friday, Oct. 13 when the Falcons travel to Burbank for the matchup. Burroughs sits at 3-2 (2-1 in league) and will look to win the game in the trenches. But CV possesses the size to hold its own this season against Burroughs. It will undoubtedly be a tough test, but with Doyle in the backfield, CV should be favored in every game from here on out.
