Glendale Community College boasts a tradition of having developed one of the finest athletic programs in California. To recognize the athletes, coaches and staff members who have contributed to the development of these programs, Glendale established the Athletic Hall of Fame 15 years ago. Celebrated on campus, thereby utilizing its own culinary arts program, this distinguished affair has grown in attendance from 100 to more than 300.
This year six were welcomed into the Hall: Tony Hoggatts (basketball) and Brett Miller (football) for Outstanding Athletic Achievement, Frank Farwell (football) for Meritorious Service, Robert Dos Remedios (football) – Pillar of Achievement, Dianne Spangler as outstanding coach and the 1979 Men’s Soccer Team as outstanding team. Oliver Shokouh, owner of the Glendale Harley-Davidson, was also recognized as a distinguished community partner. He was honored not only as a generous patron of the college but because he also established the Love Ride as a vehicle for motorcyclists to support various charities for over 30 years, annually attracting over 20,000 riders.
Emcee for the fifth year was Spiro Psaltis who reminded the audience how important their support was to the college, its athletes and their future. Guest speaker was alumni Chris Hale who was the All-American defensive back for Glendale in 1986 and later played at USC. He also played in three Super Bowls with the NFL Buffalo Bills from 1991-1993 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2011. Among his comments was a special appeal for financial assistance for the athletic program.
The underlying theme, “One a Vaquero, Always a Vaquero,” was reiterated by each of the honorees. They fondly recalled their time at GCC and how it made a significant change in their lives. The foundation and support, both athletically and academically, prepared them for a bright future.
