Since 2012, winning games over their rival Arcadia has become commonplace for Crescenta Valley High School. But now the Falcons are getting used to winning league championships.
The Falcons defeated the Apaches at Arcadia Friday night, 49-28, and with the win, claimed their second Pacific League title in three years.
Quarterback Cole Doyle had 175 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception. The offensive line didn’t not allow a sack all game, and the CV rushing attack gained 240 yards over Arcadia, which has lost to the Falcons five years in a row.
Crescenta Valley (9-1 overall, 7-0 in league) heads into the CIF playoffs on an eight-game winning streak. It’s just the third league championship for the team since 2004, but this makes it two in three years. Everyone knows what happened in 2014: the Falcons also went undefeated in league, not to mention the entire season, and claimed a CIF title with a 14-0 record.
Last week, Coach Paul Schilling was asked what has been special about his group this year.
“I don’t know. We have great kids. We had a great offseason,” he said. “Some people have been saying, we had that great CIF championship team, and there are four guys on that team,” he said, referring to Ty Hill, Andrew Traber, Brandon Beardt and Michael Alvarez.
In 2015, CV finished 7-3 and lost in the first round.
“Last year, maybe we were a little overconfident,” Schilling said. “We still had a good season, so [the players from 2014] kind of saw both sides [the last two years].”
Playoff pairings will be announced by the CIF Southern Section Sunday morning.
