Jr. Midgets – Championship
La Cañada 30, Pico Rivera Dons 0
On Sunday afternoon at Walnut High School, the La Cañada Gladiator Jr. Midget team completed its season with a 30-0 defeat over the previously unbeaten Pico Rivera Dons. This is the fifth consecutive conference championship for this group of Gladiators.
The first half was primarily a defensive battle, and the scoreless deadlock was finally broken with less than a minute left in the second quarter when Max Garrison plowed into the end zone for the first of his four touchdowns. Garrison also had an interception on the day. The Gladiators took an 8-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
On the first offensive play of the second half, Garrison scored again on a run of about 57 yards. Another score by Garrison in the third quarter had the Gladiators comfortably ahead 24-0 midway through the quarter.
Quarterback Pierce Clarkson was accurate all day, hitting Sal Guerrero and Colin Mathews for long gains and keeping the Dons’ defense guessing. This opened up the running game for Garrison, Guerrero and Andrew Sharman.
The Gladiators’ offense added a final score in the final period. Colin Matthews, Sal Guerrero and Jonah Cisneros all added two-point conversions.
On defense, Jamie Warner, Patrick Weinman and Cisneros pounded the Dons’ offense, pushing them back and shutting them out.
