The sideline of the Crescenta Valley High School girls’ soccer team erupted in cheers when Juliana Cheney put the ball in the net in the 57th minute of the Falcons’ match against Burroughs on Tuesday. That put CV up 2-1 in an important Pacific League matchup with the Indians.
But facing defeat in the final minutes, Burroughs’ Abby Riggs scored on a free kick, and the elation that was the Falcons’ turned over to the Burroughs’ sidelines. Frustration and disappointment showed on faces of the CV players as the final whistle blew; the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
Afterward, Falcon coach Tyraysha Peterson, whose team is now 3-1-3, 2-0-1 in League, talked about the severity of the loss, even this early in the season.
“Every game in League is important. Is this going to be a competitive game? Sure,” she said. “Is this turning into a rivalry game? Sure … but you can’t take any game for granted. You have to go out there and play the 80 minutes.”
“You want to keep pressuring,” she added. “It’s not a given.”
The Falcons had a 1-0 lead in the first half and appeared to have another goal off a rebound from a free kick, but offsides was called and the goal was taken off, much to Peterson’s chagrin.
Nonetheless, Peterson admitted there were minutes left on the clock her team didn’t take advantage of.
“We didn’t finish,” she said. “We learn from every game. It was nice we came back, but gave up the lead. It’s a give and take.”
The Falcons are a young team, without a senior on the roster. Former player Brianna McReynolds was a standout on the team, but she left after her sophomore season. She is a senior this year, but Peterson said the team is used to playing without her, or any go-to player.
“That’s the nice thing. We have a lot of go-to players. It’s not riding on just one person,” she said, while adding how, with players like Juliana Cheney, Ashlin Cuesta and Dana Ryan, the girls are starting to gel.
“This is a really fun team. There’s a great chemistry on the team,” she said.
The Falcons play Friday at Burbank at 3:30 p.m. The rematch with Burroughs will be Jan. 5 at Burroughs High School.
