New year, new series: “Teen Trials & Tribulations in 4 Talks”

Based on your feedback, please attend our series of presentations by experts on topics of interest to adults and to children: brain development, bullying, suicide prevention and underage drinking. These interactive talks are Thursdays, one per month, from January through April from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the CV High School library (2900 Community Ave., La Crescenta).  They are free and open to the public. And we appreciate the support of our partners for donating their time and expertise to benefit our community. Visit CV-Alliance.org to learn more.

Jan. 23: “Hardwiring of the Teenage Brain.” We open strong with scientific data that puts everything we do to prevent underage substance use into context. Tina Givrad, PhD., enthusiastically studies this topic and shares cutting-edge information she asserts “is very life changing for the next generation.” Don’t let a talk about an adolescent prefrontal cortex keep you away; this is a family-friendly presentation.

Givrad says, “I love to share this information with the teenagers as I believe they should make their decisions based on scientific data.” The whole presentation takes about 20 to 25 minutes, leaving plenty of time for questions and answers.

The other talks are Feb. 13 (bullying), March 27 (suicide prevention) and April 10 (underage drinking).

More from CV Alliance
Our Youth Alliance, for high school-aged people, meets on Jan. 9 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 pm. For location and upcoming activities, visit our website.

Congratulations to Robbyn Battles, president, and Harry Leon, vice president, of the CV Town Council. Robbyn was on our board; Harry currently is. Welcome to the new members as well. We enjoy our relationship with this august group, and are about to embark on our ABC Retail Sign program.

In a nutshell, we will post signs saying buying, selling or providing alcohol to people who are under 21 years of age is illegal. These signs are printed in nine languages including English, Spanish, Armenian and Korean.

Finally, our grant proposal for equipment was accepted by the Mary Pinola & Crescenta Valley Chamber Education Fund. Thank you to the entire committee; we are grateful!

Come and check out our new projector at the Jan. 23 talk!

Cheers!
