#KindnessMatters CV!
This week, public schools observe Yellow Ribbon Week. Its focus on suicide prevention is so very important, but because some find it too hairy for young students, the emphasis in GUSD schools is on kindness. The district has partnered with Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital in the #GreatKindnessChallenge, and our local schools are participating in some kindness activity each day. May the spirit of kindness resonate in the valley – at least until spring break’s renewal.
In partnership with Didi Hirsh AOD and GUSD, we sponsored a Kindness Week talk by Annie Ortega for all GUSD parents about one way to keep your home safe for teens: A Safe Home Pledge. Another good way to be kind is to help a friend in need, especially when that friend is you. Parents and children are encouraged to attend tonight’s talk, “Teen Anxiety and Depression,” by Lisa Vartanian who is a triple threat: GUSD parent, an academic and a therapist. The talk is at 7 p.m. in the CVHS library, 2900 Community Ave.
Next week is National Drug Facts Week. Our participation comes in an adults only talk by Ben Salazar, another triple threat. Ben’s topic is, “Rehab & Relapse,” a confusing, yet common, cycle. If you’ve ever struggled with your weight, you can begin to empathize with people fighting for sobriety. To learn more, visit the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) at www.drugabuse.org and please come to CV High’s library at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night.
We hope that these programs and the idea of kindness foster conversation in your home.
On behalf of my board of directors, a heartfelt thanks to Mary Pinola/CV Chamber Education Fund for awarding CV Alliance the funds needed to purchase a microphone and sound system. It’s portable and professional. If your organization would like to borrow our system, please ask. We appreciate their kindness.
Finally, we are already into our second quarter of our fiscal year and I want to assure those of you reading this column that our board of directors is hard at work making CV safe and lovely for you, your children and your friends. Need proof? Join us!
