Giving Credit Where Due
I want to disagree with the statement in last week’s article “The council’s decision to fully restore the Rockhaven Sanitarium late last year marked a significant victory for the Glendale Historical Society” [May 11, Council Makes Historic Proclamation].
TGHS had absolutely nothing to do with saving Rockhaven. It was saved by the Friends of Rockhaven led by Joanna Linkhorst. TGHS always pushed for commercialization of the site. At the council meeting when the decision was made, a representative of TGHS got up and said they supported the $300 a night commercial boutique hotel that, for one thing, would have stripped the interiors of their historical significance. One of the members of FOR spoke and made a point to mention that TGHS was not involved and had nothing to do with saving Rockhaven. Thankfully, the Glendale City Council ignored the first choice of their committee as well as the recommendation of TGHS.
From the website of the Historical Society of Crescenta Valley, cvhistory.org: “The Friends of Rockhaven was originally organized in April 2013 by board members of the Historical Society of Crescenta Valley to preserve Rockhaven Sanitariuim, founded 1923 and located at 2713 Honolulu Ave in Verdugo City. Effective September 29, 2014 the Friends of Rockhaven became a separate 501(c)3 non-profit corporation and while still supported by, it is no longer affiliated with HSCV. Visit them at http://www.friendsofrockhaven.org/. “
Many members of HSCV also belong to FOR.
It would be nice if credit was given where credit is due.
