Council Wraps Up Summer Projects, Looks to Fall
As summer wraps up, the Crescenta Valley Town Council is hard at work on many important issues that impact the community.
We are proud to announce that our Annual Pancake Breakfast will be held on Oct. 14 from 7 a.m. – 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s of the Mountains, located at 2563 Foothill Blvd. at the corner of Rosemont Avenue. This is a great opportunity to meet the CV Town Council and enjoy time with the community. Tickets are available for advanced purchase (Venmo @ CVTownCouncil) and at the event for $12.
The CVTC has been following the proposed development of the La Crescenta Motel property at Briggs Avenue and Foothill as developers have proposed several projects over the years. A few weeks ago, a new project application was submitted to Los Angeles County Dept. of Regional Planning. This is the first step in the approval process. The project that has been submitted is a five-story building with approximately 80 apartment units (some of which are affordable housing).
Many projects such as this are “ministerial,” meaning that the developer has the right to build without a public hearing or notification. In addition, in many cases developers also receive density and height bonuses in exchange for providing affordable housing.
The CVTC Land Use Committee is in contact with Regional Planning and is looking into the proposed project. As with all projects, we are committed to representing the community and its character.
Another issue affecting many communities is Short Term Rentals (STRs). These are more commonly known as Airbnbs in which properties are rented for periods shorter than 30 days. The Los Angeles County Tax Collector is proposing to regulate how properties can be used for this purpose. This would be accomplished by enacting an annual registration requirement as well as taxes and fees. In addition, properties would (in most cases) need to be owner-occupied and the amount of time each year that these units could be rented is limited. This type of regulation is new to the Crescenta Valley.
The tax collector will have a representative at the next CVTC general meeting to make a short presentation and answer questions. The CVTC is asking the community for feedback on this issue as well. We have posted information on our website (thecvcouncil.com). Please send any comments to chris@thecvcouncil.com.
We continue to receive reports almost daily about illegal dumping. Leaving couches or other objects on the street or sidewalk without making arrangements to have them picked up is considered illegal dumping. Every trash subscriber is entitled to two free bulky item pickups each year. To schedule one in the unincorporated county area of La Crescenta/Montrose, please go to https://www.burrtec.com/request-services/.
It is everyone’s responsibility to keep our community clean. Please do your part to help accomplish this.
Our next general meeting is on Thursday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library, 2809 Foothill Blvd. We look forward to seeing everyone there.
