Time for Giving Thanks

Hello, CV Weekly Readers! Before we talk about new and exciting upcoming events, we need to back up to this past weekend.

The CV Chamber held our Annual 5K Fun Run on Saturday, Oct. 27. It was our first year of “Running Under the Oaks” at CV Park and it was a huge hit! The course this year was clearer than it has been in the past and we were able to add a level of safety by keeping the race contained within the park. We would like to thank all of our sponsors and everyone who participated. You will be able to spot them because they will be wearing their “Running Under the Oaks” T-shirts. The Chamber would also like to congratulate our top two winners this year: James Komen and Kayla Watson. Congratulations to you both and thank you for supporting the CV Chamber early on a Saturday morning!

November is a busy month for everyone and really marks the beginning of the holiday season. First and foremost, the CV Chamber is proud to present local residents with awards for making this community a better place to live, work and raise a family at this year’s Annual Recognition Banquet held at the La Cañada Country Club. The banquet is an opportunity to honor those who excel in many aspects of local community life. Those who are awarded have not only taken time out of their busy lives to help others but they have gone above and beyond in that pursuit. It is safe to say that without their constant and unwavering sense of service this community would not be what it is today.

At the Recognition Banquet being held tonight (Nov. 1) we will be honoring: Chris Waldheim with the Don Carpenter Award, Lyn Repath Martos as the Woman of the Year, Arick Gevorkian as the Man of the Year, Dr. Linda Junge as Educator of the Year, Burrtec Waste Industries as Business of the Year, Historical Society of the Crescenta Valley as the Organization of the Year, Molly and Charly Shelton as Volunteers of the Year, Bayla Bash as the Student of the Year, Officer Michelle Gonzalez as GPD Officer of the Year, Deputy John Dempsey as LA County Sheriff’s Deputy of the Year, Firefighter Specialist Aaron Van Dyck as LA County Firefighter of the Year, Officer Jon Conley as CHP Officer of the Year and Wells Fargo with the Beautification Award. We hope you will join us in celebrating the individuals who make life better for all of us.

One holiday that is often overlooked in November is Veterans Day, which this year is being recognized on Monday, Nov. 12. Our local VFW Post 1614 and American Legion Post 288 have always been and continue to be huge supporters of every community organization in the area. This year, on Monday the 12th, they will be hosting a ceremony at Two Strike Park at 11 a.m. to recognize veterans for their commitment, sacrifice and service. They hope to see you there.

The American Legion will also be hosting our November business mixer that will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 14 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Verdugo Hills Memorial Hall, 4011 La Crescenta Ave. This mixer is unique because it will be all about anniversaries. Not only does this year mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, but the November mixer is where we will celebrate milestone anniversaries of Chamber membership. As some of you may know, the Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce has been in existence since 1925 and we have members who have been with us for as many as 45 years. This mixer presents many opportunities. You will be able to thank veterans for their service, enjoy some food and beverages and get a sense of who has been active in the community for many years. You can then join the Chamber yourself and in five years time you may be one of the honorees for being active in the community for so long!
