Lawler Book Brings Back Memories
I finally have Mike [Lawler’s] wonderful book in hand; I visited Once Upon a Time in our Montrose and secured a copy. Looking forward to getting his autograph.
You were so right, Mike, to start with Indian Springs, a true lost treasure. That kind of bulldozing and covering paradise fueled my early ’60s rebellion. There was little notice of the planned demolishing at the time; I was living at USC in LA and never even heard about the treasure being destroyed. I do not think the press was sensitive to those things then.
There was no CV Weekly to keep us informed!
It brought tears to my eyes seeing your pics and reading your summary on demise of Indian Springs. I recall vividly, as a kid in the ’50s, going thru the entrance down into the little valley, wandering around the grounds, admiring the giant oak trees, the wonderful, classic structures over the little spring bridge, jumping off the scary high board, spending long hot enchanting summers at Indian Springs, savoring ice cold Cokes and a cheeseburgers.
Thanks for preserving all these “hidden” treasures for us all. Your photo selections all through your book are simply outstanding. I actually carry it around with me.
I also loved your first-hand accounts of browsing in Rockhaven, finding the little stash on top of the shelf, tucked safely away (until you snuck in). I, too, am convinced there are spirits all around us, sensitive souls available to all who care/dare to find them. She did not want you missing with her “stash” (or you may be right – she simply did not want to get caught hiding it instead of taking it).
And Two Strike Park history is also very cool. Two Strike was CV Falcons first practice field and first team. We had nothing but rocks and dirt at CVHS.
God willing I can retire someday and join your historical society team and Robin’s team sharing the good stuff with all.
And congratulations to Robin and family. We are blessed to have a Goldsworthy not only telling it like it is, but also fighting for our American Way.
May God Bless you both and family.
Falcon Mike fighting on with you always.
